Ok, so this year is the 2500th aniversary of the original Greek marathon. We’re talking the marathon from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek runner, who was sent from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been miraculously defeated in the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. The Legend says that he ran the entire distance without stopping, but moments after proclaiming his message “Nenikekamen” (“We were victorious!”) to the city, he collapsed from exhaustion.
Yeah, so needless to say we’re not going to miss the 2500th aniversary of this historic and truely awesome event. Hopefully we don’t end up like Pheidippides…I’m sure we’ll be fine.
We have quite the crew for this adventure. A couple of us are going to take the spirit of the original marathon seriously and dressing up in Greek tunics with sandels and laurals for the race. Here is a pic of what we plan to wear..plus laural and sandle straps.
